Just before 6:00 pm on Thursday Kannapolis firefighters responded to a reported apartment fire in the 800 block of McClain Heights Court.
Fire officials said that when firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the three story apartment complex. Multiple crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control and search for victims in the apartments. Firefighters helped several occupants as well as pets escape.
Due to the size of the fire and the hot/humid temperatures extra crews were called in to assist. Most of the fire was contained to two apartments however multiple apartments were damaged by water and smoke.
Kannapolis Fire was assisted by both Concord and Landis Fire Departments, Cabarrus County EMS and Rowan Rescue. The American Red Cross is assisting the multiple residents whose apartments were damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time however it is believed to have started in a dryer.
